Technical GEO Citability Benchmark

Question

Do the retrieval and citation patterns observed in the controlled grounding test hold on real editorial/commercial pages, strongly enough to produce a repeatable Technical GEO audit framework?

Findings

START HERE — Only run this after the controlled Search Grounding vs Live Fetch Citation Test has produced at least one reproducible pattern. 1) Select one real site with log access. 2) Pick 30 pages: 10 informational, 10 commercial/service, 10 pages with richer structured/entity information where possible. 3) Map one high-intent or factual prompt to each page. 4) Record baseline indexation, snippet, ranking, rendering and robots state. 5) Run the same prompt set across supported AI search providers. 6) Record citations and match query timestamps with logs. 7) Segment outcomes by page type and technical condition. 8) Identify which controlled-test findings reproduce on real pages. 9) Convert only reproducible findings into audit checks.

MEASURE — Citation rate by page type; correct-answer rate; live-fetch rate; citation-without-live-fetch rate; effect of SSR/CSR; effect of crawler access; snippet-answer overlap; indexation/ranking context; provider-level differences. Also score each proposed audit check by reproducibility, business relevance and ease of diagnosis.

SUCCESS THRESHOLD — Deepen toward an audit framework if at least 2 technical/retrieval factors reproduce across >=2 providers or across >=20 of the 30 pages, with >=15 percentage-point citation or answer-quality delta between favourable and unfavourable conditions. Do not create a client-facing recommendation from one isolated case.

OUTPUT — Produce a Technical GEO Citability checklist with three separate layers: Crawlability (can systems access/parse it?), Retrievability (can the information be surfaced through search/index/grounding?), Citability (is the page actually selected and attributed in AI answers?). Each check must include evidence, affected providers, confidence level and remediation.

Ranking and citation are related but not equivalent. Do not treat high Google/Bing rankings as proof that a page should be cited, and do not treat a citation drop as proof of a crawl problem.

Provider behaviour can change. Date every finding and keep provider/version context when possible.
